Rep. Deutsch Issues Statement on PRC Lobbying Efforts on the Hill

(Washington, DC) - Rep. Peter Deutsch issued the following statement on the recent lobbying efforts by the Peoples Republic of China:

"As the world's leading democracy, the United States campaigns for free elections and electoral reforms across the globe. It must stand up for those examples that best demonstrate our democratic principles. As we have in the past, the U.S. should support the right of the Taiwanese populace to speak its mind through a peaceful voting process."

"The lobbying effort by China against my letter of support for the Taiwan people's democratic rights is chilling," said Deutsch. "In spite of the intense lobbying campaign by the Peoples Republic of China, the United States must always stand by democratic principles. I call on the Bush administration to do the same."
