In order to have a government that is responsive to people and the changing needs of our economy, we must bring the Federal workforce into the 21st century. Today, I was joined by the Office of Personnel Management Director John Berry and representatives from across the Federal government as we shared stories of how we are working to overcome barriers in order to implement hiring reform within the Federal workforce.

Thanks to President Obama's hiring reform package and the leadership, vision and hard work of Director John Berry, HUD is making progress as we work to further reduce the number of days it takes to fill a position and follow common practices by using resumes during initial recruitment. When I arrived in Washington two years ago, it took HUD 139 days on average to go from putting out a job announcement to actually hiring someone. These days, I am happy to report that we are now down to an average of 76 days. Coupled with HUD's five-year Strategic Plan, these steps have already begun to improve our ability to attract and retain a high quality workforce and support the President's goal of making government service cool once again.
