Issue Position: Healthcare

Issue Position

"Affordable health care for every person -- Health care should be a right, not a privilege."

700,000 of our fellow South Carolinians are uninsured, many more are underinsured, and many who are insured cannot afford their annually increasing premiums. No one should have to face the demeaning choice between a visit to the doctor or a trip to the grocery store. It's time we quit viewing health as a privilege and treat it as a right. While Congress is presently debating healthcare reform on a national level, there are some things we can do here in South Carolina. As your legislator, I would support and advocate for:

- Increasing the cigarette tax -- as we have the lowest in the country -- to expand Medicaid coverage for the uninsured or underinsured

- Congress to pass universal healthcare reform legislation if they have not already
