Issue Position: National Security

Issue Position

I support ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and bringing our troops home as soon as safely possible.

In Afghanistan, the goals of expelling al-Qaeda and overthrowing the Taliban were accomplished years ago. It took about a thousand Special Forces troops to overthrow the Taliban in 2001. Why do we need a hundred times that number now to keep them out?

This occupation is an 18th century strategy used against a 14th century enemy. We've done enough for the security and well-being of the Pushtuns, the Tajiks and the Hazara.

The same can be said for the Sunnis, Shiites, and Kurds in Iraq. We need to get our troops, all our troops, out of Iraq.
Instead of spending billions on the other side of the world, we can spend that money here to rebuild America. We simply can no longer afford these wars. The American people are tired of war, and we deserve peace.

Back home, we need to continue the excellent efforts to protect our borders and combat terrorism. I will support efforts to provide the Transportation Security Administration, FBI, CIA, and other agencies with the tools they need to prevent another attack on U.S. soil.
