No disaster in recent history has highlighted the importance of environmental stewardship than the recent Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico. South Florida is home to some of America's most beautiful environmental treasures, including our beaches and the Everglades. These natural resources are the foundation of Florida's economy, and for that reason, I have long advocated for immediate investment in renewable energy instead of the expansion of offshore oil drilling.
Transitioning America to renewable sources of energy will not only help us combat global climate change, but help us strengthen our national security and grow our economy. By reducing our dependence on oil from the Middle East, we can avoid supporting regimes that do not have America's best interests at heart.
I am working to move our transition to renewable energy and energy efficiency forward in Congress. Within my first few weeks in Congress, the House of Representatives adopted my amendment to the Home Star Energy program extending energy efficient rebates to homeowners rebuilding after natural disasters. I support initiatives like the Home Star Program and the Investment Act, which will spur consumer demand for energy efficient products and technology and help revitalize America's manufacturing sector.
I am confident that Florida can become a leader in the national movement to create a green energy future. There is enormous potential for industries in solar power, ocean current technology, and biofuel development to create new jobs in South Florida and help steer our country towards a more secure energy future.
