Dear Friends,

This week, I'm proud to update you on the progress of a federally-funded project at Brookhaven National Lab that is employing nearly 1,200 construction workers to build a new research facility that will keep our area at the forefront of scientific innovation for years to come.

On Wednesday, I joined a group of lab officials and local elected leaders at BNL to mark the completion of the steel framework of the building that will house the new National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II), which received $150 million in funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA, or Recovery Act). When complete, NSLS-II will be the brightest x-ray source in the world and will revolutionize research in every area of science and technology that is critical to America's economic and energy security.

Best of all, that groundbreaking research will be taking place right here on Long Island, with 500 permanent researchers working full time at NSLS-II and 3,500 temporary researchers visiting each year. From the temporary construction jobs created to build it, to the permanent research positions it will support, and the local businesses who will serve the visiting researchers using it, NSLS-II will be a powerful engine of economic activity as well as of scientific discoveries.

Lab officials estimate the NSLS-II building is nearly 40% complete and the light source is expected to be fully operational by 2015. Altogether, BNL will receive $307 million through the ARRA, supporting all aspects of its vital mission. The Recovery Act is making a big difference in our community in places like BNL. I am pleased that my work in Congress has helped the lab accelerate their work to build a brighter economic future for Long Island.

As always, if you have questions about legislation or need assistance on a federal issue, please do not hesitate to contact my Long Island office at 631-696-6500 or visit my website at www.timbishop.house.gov.

Yours,

Congressman Tim Bishop
