Speaking plainly

Editor, Daily News:

Job creation is my No. 1 priority.

On Sept. 19, editorial page editor Jeff Lytle and Daily News reporters treated the readers of this newspaper to an unfortunate side of Miami's worst political behavior.

For too long politicians in Miami have used the issue of Cuba to cast their opponents as traitors or weak.

There is a belief among career politicians in Miami that you can say outrageous things in Spanish and the English-speaking voters will never figure it out.

A longtime career politician, David Rivera, was caught red-handed playing this game and then denying it to your reporters.

I would like to make a clear distinction between our priorities. While Cuba is important, creating jobs and growing the economy are the most important issues for our district and will be my top priorities. I have released 25 job-creating and deficit-reducing ideas for South and Southwest Florida. I have also met with dozens of small business owners in the district and asked them for their ideas on how to best grow the economy.

My opponent is obsessed with Cuba and even declared to the Miami Herald that he wanted to be the "mayor of Cienfuegos in a free Cuba."

I am focused on getting Southwest Florida back to work.

You have my word that, unlike my opponent, I will not sing a different tune while speaking Spanish.

-- Joe Garcia
