One Tenth of 1%

Statement

Date: Oct. 13, 2010

I will probably only spend .1% of what Mike Crapo does in this campaign for the U.S. Senate seat he currently holds. He is reported to have raised campaign funds of more than $4 million with his biggest contributors being the very financial institutions he oversees as a member of the Senate Committee on Banking. How and why would you ever need to amass that kind of money unless you plan to be in Washington D.C. for a very long time.
I would invite and encourage Senator Crapo to return any & all monies donated to his campaign by Wall Street and other large banking firms. Election laws also allow any excess campaign funds to be carried over or donated to charity. If there isn't already a charity dedicated to reducing our national debt, I encourage Senator Crapo to start one and then invite all candidates to contribute liberally.
It seems most of our career politicians have the common goal of remaining in office no matter the cost. Do we really want someone using valuable time trying to preserve their seat in Congress? Or, do we want someone working to restore our republic to it's proper limited role and then returning home to let someone else energetically do the same?
Our forefathers did not want or envision career legislators. Even George McGovern, who served 18 years in the Senate, and then opened a hotel that went bankrupt after 2 years in 1990 said "I ... wish that during the years I was in public office I had had this firsthand experience about the difficulties business people face every day. That knowledge would have made me a better U.S. senator."
We need the frequent renewal of those from the common citizenry to keep our government close to "We The People". In terms of service in Congress, I believe we have many qualified people to choose from. Even Senator Crapo's voting record when compared to those who track each person's record against what the Constitution authorizes, was much better in his early years in Congress, or when facing reelection. I think we need to make popular the saying "Twelve years is plenty and 18 is too many". Please study the issues and positions each of us stand for and compare them to the Constitution as originally intended by our founders. I would be honored if after doing so you decide to support this movement with any of your time, talents, or financial means, but especially with your heart. Remember to "Never Underestimate the Worth of a Good Cause".
