Letter to The Honorable Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives

Letter

Dear Madam Speaker:

On behalf of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, we are very concerned about the possible
consideration of legislation regarding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). We are troubled by proposed reductions in food assistance.

We respectfully request that the House postpone any vote on the Senate's version of the Child Nutrition bill, S. 3307, the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, until alternative offsets to
the SNAP are found.

This request reflects the concerns expressed in a letter dated August 13 th 2010, signed by more than 100 members of Congress, that using SNAP as an offset will harm the same people we seek to help in this legislation.

While we acknowledge that we must sacrifice the many benefits that the House version of Child Nutrition Reauthorization provide, we ask simply that alternative offsets be found to pay for the Senate's more modest but meaningful improvements to the Child Nutrition Act.

We look forward to work with you together to ensure that. these concerns are addressed in the final bill.

Sincerely,

Rep. Raul M. Grijalva, Co-Chair
Rep. Lynn Woolsey, Co-Chair
