Stabenow Statement Regarding the Restart Plan Announcement for the Enbridge Pipeline

Statement

Date: Sept. 23, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) made the following statement regarding the U.S. Department of Transportation's announcement to allow Enbridge to begin a gradual restart of the 286-mile pipeline that ruptured in July.

"I am deeply concerned by the Department of Transportation's decision to approve a gradual restart plan for the Enbridge pipeline before a full investigation has been completed. This pipeline runs through communities from Southwest Michigan all the way to Port Huron. Restarting the pipeline without fully knowing the cause of the rupture will put families and communities across Michigan at risk. I will continue to monitor this process closely, and I urge the Transportation Department to answer the serious questions that have been raised about this spill." -- U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow

Last month, Senators Stabenow and Levin sent a letter to the Administrator of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration asking that all necessary safety precautions be taken into consideration before approving a restart of the pipeline.
