Levin Statement on Oil Spill Cleanup in Talmadge Creek and Kalamazoo River

Statement

Date: Sept. 27, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., issued the following statement today regarding the oil spill into Talmadge Creek and the Kalamazoo River. The Environmental Protection Agency reported to Levin's office today that Enbridge has completed floodplain and stream bank cleanup of the oil spill.

"This is a single step in a long road to recovery. The devastating spill will have long-lasting impacts on this region, and I am hopeful that the EPA will continue to press Enbridge to promptly finish the remainder of the cleanup, including removal of contaminated sediments. We must also continue to monitor the long-term effects of the spill on wildlife and natural resources; we must continue to ensure that Enbridge remediates those effects; and we must ensure that Enbridge fully and completely compensates residents and businesses that have been damaged by the spill."
