I promised to change the way business was done in Washington. We had a Congress that voted to increase their own salaries, while refusing to provide a minimum wage increase for hard-working, tax-paying families.
Within my first 100 hours in Congress, I joined my colleagues to pass legislation increasing the federal minimum wage for the first time in nearly a decade. Raising the minimum wage is about creating a fair opportunity for all Americans -- I believe it's simply the right thing to do.
Raising the minimum wage also makes economic sense for our local small businesses, who will profit when those larger paychecks pump added cash right back into their bottom lines.
