Letter to The Honorable Nancy Pelosi, Speaker, U.S. House of Representatives and The Honorable Steny Hoyer, Majority Leader, U.S. House of Representatives

Letter

Date: Sept. 23, 2010
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Trade

Today, Congressman Mike Michaud and Congresswoman Betty Sutton (OH-13) sent a letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer requesting that the House not adjourn before the Currency Reform for Fair Trade Act (H.R. 2378) has come to the House floor for a vote. Both Representatives praised the Ways and Means Committee for moving forward with a mark-up of the bill, which is currently scheduled to take place tomorrow morning.

"This is an extremely pressing economic issue that deserves to be acted on before Congress adjourns," said Michaud, Chairman of the House Trade Working Group. "Too many workers and businesses in Maine and throughout the country are struggling to get ahead because of China's deliberate and illegal undervaluation of its currency. Action on this bill will send a strong signal to China that we are serious about leveling the international playing field."

Dear Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Hoyer:

We are extremely pleased that the Ways and Means Committee has scheduled a mark-up of H.R. 2378, the Currency Reform for Fair Trade Act. We ask that the House not adjourn before this important legislation has come to the House floor for a vote.

Simply put, China's undervalued currency hurts our businesses and puts Americans out of work. It is also a clear violation of international trade laws. We cannot tolerate China's currency manipulation anymore. Congress must act now and force China to play by the rules.

Consideration of H.R. 2378 in the House is critical to our economic recovery and our long-term economic viability. We urge Leadership to bring this bill to the floor before Congress adjourns and allow Members to vote to stop unfair Chinese trade practices and to protect our constituents' jobs.

Thank you for your efforts to address this critical issue.

Sincerely,

Michael H. Michaud Betty Sutton
Member of Congress Member of Congress
