Issue Position

Our Constitution does not authorize the federal government to play any formal part in local education and our Founders clearly never envisioned the overbearing role it now plays. As the federal government has increased its role in key classroom decision, students have not benefited. Federal education bureaucrats in Washington--many of whom have never set foot in a classroom as a teacher or parent--are increasingly setting the course in our communities. Our nation would be better served by returning resources and decisions to the state and community, and ultimately to parents, where they belong.

In the interim, I believe federal education funds should limited directed away from federal bureaucracies and the US Department of Education should be barred from making curriculum decisions for local educators.

As a member of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) committee, I will continue to play an active role in reviewing key federal education programs like No Child Left Behind.
