Bill to Amend Tribal Self-Governance Act Passes by Voice Vote

H.R. 4347, which would amend the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act of 1975 to provide greater legal authority to Native American Tribes as they pursue, at each Tribe's option, the goal of transferring authority and responsibility from the federal program bureaucracy to tribal program administration, passed the House by voice vote today. Congressman Young is the lead Republican cosponsor of this legislation.

"This bill is supported by the Alaskan Federation of Natives, and by many Alaskan tribes," said Rep. Young. "This is a good piece of legislation that will provide greater flexibility to tribal governments and streamline federal oversight. Tribal leaders know what is good for their people, more so than any bureaucrat in D.C. is ever going to. The federal government should not be micromanaging, but instead allow tribes to set their own priorities."
