Issue Position: Social Security

Issue Position

Sandy recognizes the importance of keeping a promise. Our seniors have worked and contributed to our communities over the years while paying into Social Security. No one, especially Congress should take money from this program to subsidize other government spending programs. Social Security benefits must be protected, the retirement age should not be raised on those who have relied on our promises, and taxes should not be increased. Any of these changes would violate the promise that was made to today's seniors.

Sandy opposes the privatization of Social Security.

The fact is one of the most significant problems with the system is that Congress spends money dedicated to Social Security for other big government spending programs. Further, the Obama-Pelosi-Kosmas job-killing agenda means with high unemployment, there are less workers paying into the program and keeping it solvent. In 2009, the Social Security Trustees reported that the program will pay out more than it collects in 2016.

The first thing Congress needs to do to extend the life of Social Security is stop raiding the Trust Fund and stop spending more money than we take in. As a member of the Congress, Sandy will stand up to any new spending proposals until we've balanced the budget and stopped the reckless spending.
