Blog: Suing Arizona Part Dos
Statement
A couple of months ago I asked Congressman Bob Etheridge to defund the Obama Justice Department's lawsuit against Arizona's immigration law. After the federal government had ignored the problems border states like Arizona had endured from illegal aliens and drug gangs crossing the Mexican border, Arizona passed a state law that mimics the federal immigration laws that were not being enforced. The reaction of the Obama administration was to sue Arizona to stop the new law.
Now they are at it again. The new lawsuit, filed this week, says that Arizona community colleges acted illegally because they required noncitizens to provide their green cards before they could be hired for jobs. Yesterday it was reported that "Justice officials said the colleges discriminated against nearly 250 noncitizen job applicants by mandating that they fill out more documents than required by law to prove their eligibility to work."
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Zainul Singaporewalla, a U.S. permanent resident who was offered a math teaching position at Glendale Community College. He was asked to fill out a federal form attesting to his immigration status, produce a driver's license and social security card and to complete another form which required additional documents and his green card. When he couldn't present his green card the college would not let him work.
So now the Obama Justice Department is back filing another lawsuit against Arizona. Instead of filing lawsuits, maybe the Obama administration should be enforcing immigration laws so that the citizens of states facing the most severe effects of illegal immigration would get some relief.
Bob Etheridge declined my challenge to amend the Justice Department's Appropriation Bill to deny funding for the Department's earlier suit against Arizona.
