Cantwell Statement on Labor Day

Statement

Date: Sept. 3, 2010
Location: Seattle, WA
Issues: Labor Unions

Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) released the following statement commemorating Labor Day:

"This Labor Day, I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation and admiration for the working men and women here in Washington state and across the country. This is their day. Long before 1882 when Labor Day was first celebrated, the labor movement was building America into the bastion of freedom, prosperity and opportunity it is today. Labor serves as the guardian of the American Dream, and I am proud that Washington state is home to a thriving organized labor movement. The working men and women of this country are the reason why our productivity is the envy of the world.

"On this Labor Day, too many Americans are looking for work rather than enjoying the fruits of their labor. Addressing our unacceptably high unemployment is my top priority. We have taken concrete steps to address the abuses on Wall Street that have caused so much pain on Main Street. Now we must ensure that businesses across the country are able to access the capital they need so that they can unleash the productive power of our work force. That's why I am fighting in the United States Senate to get the Small Business Jobs Act passed and sent to the President when the Senate returns to Washington, D.C. next week. When we ask the question, 'Who will rebuild our economy?' the answer is, "The American worker.'"
