Issue Position: Education

Issue Position

I have witnessed the abysmal state of education in this State all of my life. I cannot recall any time that our state ranked better than 40 in the national list. True we have pockets of acceptable instruction, but for the most part we have abandoned the commitment to developing our most important resource, young minds. As a State Senator I would like to explore returning the funds from the lottery to education (as it was originally sold to the public). I would like to see a better measurement for minimum standards. I am concerned about the realities of the FCAT. Most of all, I do not believe that universal standards are correct for every situation or district. Mandating programs and requirements without providing necessary funding is a reoccurring challenge in this state. This barely begins to address the educational challenges we face. Where do your concerns lie?
