Harry Teague's Statement on the Signing of the Emergency Border Security Supplemental Appropriations Act

Statement

Congressman Harry Teague issued this statement today after President Obama signed the Emergency Border Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, legislation co-sponsored by Teague.

"As the drug war being waged across the border continues to escalate, it is clear that we must take additional steps to ensure that the tide of violence does not sweep in to New Mexico's border communities. And today we mark the first of those steps in securing the US-Mexico border, bolstering our national security, and making sure that New Mexican families and communities are safe. The Emergency Border Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, signed in to law today, will make a real difference for public safety by providing more Border Patrol agents, more Forward Operating Bases in New Mexico's bootheel, updated technology, and more resources to support customs and immigration programs in place in the region. This surge will ensure that these agents have the support they need to fight illegal border activity and swiftly apprehend violent criminals.

After working tirelessly to bring these much-needed additional resources to support our border region efforts, I applaud the President for acting quickly and signing the Emergency Border Security Supplemental Appropriations Act the day after its final passage. But my work to secure the US-Mexico border will not stop with this bill. I will continue to fight to create a comprehensive strategy to address border violence and to ensure that the necessary support is available to both federal and local law enforcement programs in the border region so that my constituents feel safe and protected in their homes."
