Childers Vows to Preserve Social Security for North Mississippi Seniors, Brings $2.75 Million Back to the First District in Resolved Claims

Today, U.S. Rep. Travis Childers (MS-01) held a Social Security Roundtable with seniors at Traceway Retirement Community in Tupelo. Childers recently honored the 75th Anniversary of Social Security by continuing to oppose plans to privatize Social Security and raise the retirement age.

"This past Saturday marked the 75th anniversary of Social Security, a promise of economic security and stability for Americans after a lifetime of hard work," said Childers. "During tough economic times, Social Security is more important than ever for the more than 162,000 beneficiaries in Mississippi's First District. Hard-working North Mississippians who have paid into the system for almost their entire lives have earned this guaranteed benefit, and they deserve to know that their retirement is stable and secure. That's why I firmly oppose plans to both privatize Social Security and raise the retirement age.

"For three-quarters of a century, through 13 recessions, Americans have been able to depend on benefits that arrive on-time and in-full. In honor of this milestone, I vow to continue to preserve this program for generations to come."

Last Saturday -- on the 75th anniversary of Social Security -- Childers held office hours in Columbus to meet with First District Social Security beneficiaries who needed help with pending claims. Since taking office, Childers has brought back $2.75 million to the district through Social Security casework for constituents.
