Broun Opposes State Bailout

Statement

Date: Aug. 10, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Representative Paul Broun, M.D. (GA-10) today released the following statement as the House considers a $26.1 billion state bailout bill:

"With our national debt above $13 trillion, the federal government cannot afford to provide a $26.1 billion bailout for states that refuse to reduce their spending. Just last week, Georgia made more tough decisions to cut spending and balance the state budget. It is wrong to expect Georgians to fund the rest of the nation's out of control spending. In case the liberal leadership in Washington forgot, the American people still fund the federal government. If the states can't afford it, neither can the federal government.

"This bill, which includes an education bailout and Medicaid stimulus extension, simply perpetuates states' reliance on the federal government. The American people have rejected more bailouts and big-government stimulus projects. It's past time for Washington to listen to the people."
