Governor's Weekly Message to Delawareans

Statement

In his weekly message , Governor Markell talks about two teams of Delaware public high school teachers selected by NASA and the National Science Teachers Association to conduct experiments in a reduced gravity environment and bring their experiences back to share with students and colleagues. As educators return from their trip and we near the start of a new school year, these teachers are among many preparing to share newly-acquired knowledge with their students.

"These teachers will be able to talk firsthand about the concepts of "gravity' and "centrifugal force' because they will have had the firsthand experience of floating alongside world-class scientists," said Governor Markell. "This experience reinforces the importance of science, technology, engineering and math. Our public schools are a launching pad for successful scientists, researchers, engineers and maybe even an astronaut or two of the future. A strong foundation in hard science is critical to ensuring that some of our students reach their lifetime potential and that our state reaches long-term prosperity."

The teachers' trip was co-sponsored by the DuPont Company and the Delaware Association of Agri-science Educators.

At noon every Friday, a new video message is posted to the Governor's website and YouTube channel and is distributed to Delaware media outlets. Transcripts of the messages are posted and the audio version of the Governor's message is available on iTunes as a podcast for distribution to personal MP3 players and home computers.
