Dr. David Gill, candidate for Congressman Tim Johnson's seat in Illinois' 15th district, blasted Johnson for being one of only six congressmen last week to vote against funding health care for veterans in 2011.

House Resolution 5822 passed by a vote of 411 to 6. The bill appropriates $120.8 billion in mandatory and discretionary spending for the Department of Veterans Affairs. The bill will provide funds in 2011 to cover medical care for 6.1 million patients to and hire 4,000 claims processors to ensure veterans get needed care.

"Mr. Johnson voted to send our young men and women off to these endless wars, ignoring the public statements of myself and others, who urged us NOT to invade Iraq," Dr. Gill said. "Now he is one of only six members of the House who refuse to support the funding of the health care our veterans deserve."

Dr. Gill pointed out that the vote occurred at the same time that Johnson used taxpayer dollars to prepare and send out three four-page, full-color glossy brochures touting his "accomplishments" in the House, including one aimed at military and veterans.

"The last one arrived in my mailbox 94 days before the election, a mere four days before he would have violated the letter of the FEC laws pertaining to these matters," Dr. Gill added. "As far as I'm concerned, by using tax dollars to fund his campaign, he has certainly violated the spirit of the law and grossly violated the spirit of the trust that we have with our young men and women who put their lives on the line in service to this great country.

"Johnson's record fails to serve the people of this district and continues to inspire me to work harder and harder to remove him from office on Nov. 2," he continued. "I'm tired from non-stop campaigning and work in the E.R." at Bloomington's Advocate BroMenn, "but I'm never too tired to stand up for such a noble goal as supporting our troops and veterans."
