Issue Position: Promoting Fiscal Responsibility

Issue Position

Issues: Taxes

Government must live within its means. Doing this means balancing the budget without gimmicks or short-term fixes. Randy embraced this challenge and backed efforts to bring the state budget back in line. These included:

* Eliminating over 48 commissions, boards, committees, and councils. (HB 2617)
* Suspending wage and benefit increases while lengthening furlough periods for state employees, bringing government practices in alignment with realities of the economic climate.
* Closing archaic and inequitable tax loopholes, stopping the flow of hundreds of millions of dollars worth of preferences from the state's coffer. (SB 6853)
* Supporting the responsible closure of a two-year $12 billion dollar shortfall without raising general sales, real estate excise, or property taxes, while keeping our promises to our children, students, and seniors who rely on critical services.
