Feingold Statement Urging the House to Pass Bill Ending Automatic Congressional Pay Raises

Statement

Date: Aug. 9, 2010

"As the House returns to session this week, I urge Speaker Pelosi to bring up for a vote legislation passed by the Senate ending automatic annual pay increases for members of Congress once and for all. The Senate passed that legislation, S. 620, unanimously in March 2009, sixteen months ago. It is long past time for the House to act on it. No one doubts that if that bill came to the floor for a vote, it would pass overwhelmingly. All that stands between ending the current system of back-door congressional pay hikes is a few minutes of the House's time, and the president's signature. I call on Speaker Pelosi to allow the House to vote on this bill."

Senator Feingold's legislation to end the automatic pay raise for members of Congress is included in his Control Spending Now Act, a bill made up of more than 40 specific proposals to eliminate wasteful spending and slash the deficit by about one-half trillion dollars. Senator Feingold does not accept mid-term pay raises, returning any of the annual increases that occur in his 6-year term.
