Barbara Lee Applauds Federal Court's Decision to Overturn Proposition 8

Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) released this statement following a U.S. District Court's decision to overturn Proposition 8, the initiative that banned same-sex marriage in California:

"Today's decision by the U.S. District Court to overturn Proposition 8 is a victory for the many thousands of committed couples in the state of California and for equal rights everywhere.

"It is my hope that as we continue this fight, this decision will stand and reaffirm that marriage is a civil right guaranteed under the constitution. This ruling moves our nation one step further in the long march toward ensuring equal protections and rights for all people."

Congresswoman Lee is a founding member of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus co-chaired by Chairman Barney Frank and Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin. She is proud to stand with 52 bi-partisan members to continue the work of ensuring that every American is treated equally under the law no matter their race, sex, national origin, sexual orientation or gender identity.
