Issue Position

Our environmental policies must start with the recognition that we have a fundamental right to clean air and water. New Mexico is blessed with both stunning natural beauty and a wealth of energy resources. We must preserve one while responsibly developing the other. That means making New Mexico an attractive place to start clean energy businesses using sources and technologies that already exist and that we have in abundance, like solar, wind and geothermal. It also means using the scientific and intellectual resources at places like LANL and Sandia Labs to develop even more effective clean energy solutions. Finally, much as we'd all like to think otherwise, the reality is that while much of this technology is available right now, we won't be able to switch over from fossil fuels overnight. That means we need to continue to develop and implement environmentally responsible and economically doable ways to harvest traditional fuels while protecting our right to clean air, water and land.
