Johnson Calls on Wilson to Demand Charlie Rangel to Resign From Congress

Candidate for Congress Bill Johnson today called on Congressman Charlie Wilson to publicly demand fellow Democrat Charlie Rangel to resign from Congress.

Rangel has been under a lengthy probe by the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct for a series of ethics allegations. That investigation resulted, last week, with charges of multiple ethics violations.

Congressman Charlie Wilson worked to protect Rangel, voting to allow Rangel to retain his lucrative Ways and Means Committee Chairmanship while under investigation.

"Charlie Wilson took Rangel's dirty money and had to donate it to charity; and now he should do the right thing here and demand that Rangel resign from Congress," Johnson said. "His vote to allow Rangel to retain his chairmanship while under investigation to the Ethics Committee shows that Wilson puts his political allies ahead of protecting his constituents."

Johnson said that this is an important issue because, in addition to broken promises about focusing on creating jobs and curtailing spending, Charlie Wilson ran on a platform of fighting corruption. He pointed out that fellow class-of-2007 Ohio Congresswoman Betty Sutton has already called on Rangel to resign.

"When he ran for Congress in 2006, Wilson signed a pledge to "end the culture of corruption' and Congresswoman Betty Sutton, who also signed the pledge, did the right thing calling on Rangel to resign," Johnson said. "This isn't a partisan issue -- people across Eastern and Southern Ohio are sick of broken promises from Charlie Wilson, and they're sick of distractions that keep Congress from focusing on real priorities like cutting spending and creating jobs."

Bill Johnson is a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel who resides in Poland with his wife LeeAnn and son Nathan. He currently works in a senior management IT role with a public traded company headquartered in Northeast Ohio.
