Moore Introduces Bill to Assist Cancer Survivors

Press Release

Date: June 18, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Dennis Moore (Third District -- Kansas) announced this week the introduction of H.R. 5560, the Quality Cancer Care for Life Act. The bill focuses on the wellness and life of a person after the conclusion of active cancer treatment by remedying the deficit of research and patient programs, including both the prevention of second cancers, as well as the prevention and control of specific, predictable adverse treatment-related outcomes.

"Survivorship is an often overlooked step in the lifelong journey of a cancer patient," Congressman Moore said. "It is my sincere hope that this provides some relief for those who meet the challenges of such a process head on - it's simply the right thing to do."

There is little research documenting effective post-treatment regimens to help survivors regain wellness, feel better, re-enter the working world, and return to a normal, healthy lifestyle. H.R. 5560 would provide additional resources for research, dissemination of findings, personalized service delivery, and assessment of treatment outcomes in order to improve the health and quality of life for survivors.

The Congressman has worked closely with Barbara Unell, Founder and Executive Director of Back in the Swing, to address the issue of survivorship and post-treatment care. Moore is currently seeking co-sponsors for the bill and hopes for quick consideration by the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Congressional members interested in co-sponsoring should contact Congressman Moore's Senior Legislative Assistant, Sarah Lochner, at sarah.lochner@mail.house.gov.
