Ellsworth Calls for Prompt and Thorough Investigation of BP's Alleged Involvement in the Release of Convicted Lockerbie Bomber al-Megrahi

Location: Washington, DC

Today, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced the State Department would investigate alleged links between BP and the release of Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, the Libyan man convicted in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 that killed 179 Americans. BP recently announced it would begin drilling off the coast of Libya. Brad Ellsworth released the following statement in response to the announcement:

"These allegations are serious and troubling, and I am glad to see Secretary Clinton's announcement today that the State Department will be looking into what role, if any, BP played in al-Megrahi's release. It was the wrong decision, regardless of whether it was for economic or humanitarian reasons, to release al-Megrahi in the first place. There should be a prompt and thorough investigation of the circumstances of his release and these allegations of quid-pro-quo between BP and the Libyan government."
