Recently, Arizona took action to protect their state from the scourge of violence and crime that illegal immigration is causing in their state. For years they asked for help from the federal government to enforce immigration laws and protect their communities. After being ignored, they've taken action on this important issue within their state government, and I agree with their actions. The primary function of the federal government is to protect its citizens from foreign threats and yet we hear Administration officials like Attorney General Eric Holder and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano -- herself a former Governor of Arizona -- claiming they have yet to review Arizona's new immigration enforcement law even though they claim to be against it.
This is yet another example highlighting how out of touch Washington is with the needs of main street America. I support these efforts by Arizona to secure their border and I applaud Gov. Brewer's leadership on behalf of her state.
We are a nation originally comprised of immigrants and while I support legal immigration, we must never forget that we are a nation of laws and they must be upheld. Those seeking to come to our country through legal avenues are always welcome in America.
