Date: July 21, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar released the following statement after Senate passage of legislation to extend unemployment benefits. Retroactive benefits will be paid to those who experience a lapse in coverage.

"By passing this legislation, we are giving 2.5 million jobless Americans who have lost their benefits the boost they need to get back on their feet," Klobuchar said. "Many Minnesotans are struggling to keep their heads above water in this difficult economy. We will need a strong and competitive workforce in order to recover from this economic downturn."

The Senate-passed bill must be approved by the U.S. House of Representatives before going to the President to be signed into law.
