Gov. Sanford Signs Bill Lifting Restrictions on Breweries

Press Release

Date: July 13, 2010
Location: Columbia, SC

Gov. Mark Sanford today joined state legislators and industry representatives to sign H.4572, a bill allowing breweries and specialty beverage retailers to sell their products directly to customers. The new law also allows breweries to offer tastings of their products to consumers in conjunction with customer tours of the breweries' facilities.

"It has long been our belief that government has a duty to allow businesses as much freedom as possible, and inasmuch as this bill was in accord with that conviction, we think it's a commonsense provision," Gov. Sanford said. "We see no reason why South Carolina breweries shouldn't be allowed to sell the products they make to consumers, and indeed we'd like to see more of this kind of deregulation in the future."

Up until now, the state's breweries have not been allowed to sell their products directly to customers, even on their own premises.
