Stabenow Announces Support for Supreme Court Nominee Elena Kagan

Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) today made the following statement in support of Solicitor General Elena Kagan to be the next Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.

"I strongly support the confirmation of Elena Kagan to be the next Justice of the United States Supreme Court.

"She grew up in a family like so many in Michigan -- with parents who worked hard for a living so they could provide for their children. Her mom was a teacher, and her dad was a tenant's lawyer in New York City. She saw first-hand the effects of laws and court decisions on the everyday lives of Americans.

"Throughout her distinguished career, she has brought the lessons she learned from her parents --in her words, "service, character, and integrity'-- to every role.

"In private practice, Elena Kagan represented clients in litigation; today, she represents all of us as the "people's lawyer,' the Solicitor General of the United States. Her job, every day, is to represent her clients -- the people of the United States -- before the U.S. Supreme Court.

"She made it clear during her confirmation hearings that she would be a cautious and prudent Justice, and I believe she will provide a good counterweight to the judicial activism of the Roberts Court.

"As a Justice, I believe she will continue to represent the people of this great country. That's why I urge my colleagues today to confirm her nomination without delay." -- U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow.
