Broun Opposes Bailouts and Bloated Budget

U.S. Representative Paul Broun, M.D. (GA-10) released the following statement as the House considers The Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2010, H.R. 4899. In addition to $37 billion of funding for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, this bill includes a $10 billion bailout for teachers, billions more for a myriad of other non-defense government programs and agencies, and deems a $1.121 trillion budget for FY 2011.

"I am disappointed that my colleagues chose to use vital funding for our troops to authorize more bailouts and unnecessary spending. Congress has a fiduciary duty to the American taxpayer and "deeming' a budget in order to avoid a tough vote on an unpopular, record-high deficit is negligent. With our national debt at $13 trillion, the federal government cannot afford to provide a $10 billion bailout for states that refuse to cut back their spending, such as California and New York.

"I am appalled with House leadership for playing partisan politics with our troops. With our men and women in harm's way overseas, it is critical that we provide the funding and resources necessary to successfully and safely accomplish their mission."
