Rogers: China's Currency Manipulation Steals U.S. Jobs

Congressman Wants Chinese Held Accountable to Fair Trade Laws

U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, R-MI-08, is co-signer of a letter to House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Sander Levin, D-MI-12 urging him to use his position as chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee to pass legislation Rogers has co-sponsored that would finally hold China accountable for its currency manipulation.

"China's currency manipulation steals American jobs," Rogers said. "American workers are the best in the world, and they can compete with anyone on a level playing field and under the rule of law.

"China's blatant disregard for international trade law and its practice of artificially valuing its currency to create an advantage over the U.S. and other trading partners cannot be allowed to continue."

Rogers signed the letter requesting that Chairman Levin have the committee take up H.R. 2378, the Currency Reform for Fair Trade Act, which would impose countervailing and anti-dumping duties on nations that manipulate their currencies, allowing them to undercut prices of American-manufactured goods.

"In Michigan, where our economy is based on a strong manufacturing base, we have experienced the devastation unfair trade practices can have on our jobs," Rogers said. "Congress needs to stand up for U.S. manufacturers and hold countries accountable for currency manipulation and other illegal practices."
