Hatch Responds To President Obama's Speech On Immigration

Statement

Date: July 1, 2010
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Immigration

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, issued the following response today following President Obama's speech in which he called for comprehensive immigration reform:

"The president's call for immigration reform is little more than cynical political pandering to his left wing political base and is more about giving backdoor amnesty to illegal immigrants than real reform.

"In calling for a massive overhaul of immigration law, the administration is also putting the cart before the horse. When the house is on fire, you don't try to fix the plumbing. We have a crisis on our hands that needs immediate attention. Hardened criminals, gangs, drug dealers and human traffickers are crossing the border between Mexico and the United States in droves and endangering American citizens. Rather than playing politics with the issue, the administration should listen to the American people and secure the border.

"It's time for the White House to lead by example by enforcing the immigration laws that are already on the books."
