Statement from Governor Paterson on the Bay Runway Construction at John F. Kennedy International Airport

Statement

Date: June 29, 2010
Issues: Transportation

"With the completion of the Bay Runway reconstruction, John F. Kennedy International Airport has stepped boldly into a new era of transportation that will mean jobs, new revenue, and greater economic growth for the entire tri-state region. This expansion follows ample precedent for government meeting the challenge of economic despair by fortifying infrastructure. Both the Lincoln Tunnel and the Tri-borough Bridge - now Robert F. Kennedy Bridge - were Public Works Projects that helped our region emerge from the Great Depression.

"Today, as we stand at another financial crossroads, the restored Bay Runway represents a vital, 21st century infrastructure investment that will boost our economy by making the region a more accessible and desirable place to live, work, and do business. At the same time, the upgrade ensures that JFK's status as the nation's gateway is secure for decades to come. My thanks to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for its leadership and hard work; to our airline partners, whose cooperation and sacrifice were so essential; and of course to the Federal Aviation Administration for their collaboration and expertise."
