Broun Statement on Taxpayer Funded Abortions

U.S. Representative Paul Broun, M.D. (GA-10) today made the following statement after the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a new report on the amount of taxpayer dollars that have been allocated to organizations that promote or provide abortions, including Planned Parenthood.

"Since 1994, Planned Parenthood has received almost $1.7 billion from the federal government. It is astounding that a government designed to be run of the people, by the people and for the people can give $1.7 billion to an organization that promotes a procedure that the majority of the people oppose," said Broun. "According to a CNN poll, sixty-one percent of Americans oppose taxpayer funded abortions. Providing $1.7 billion of taxpayer funds to an organization against the will of the American people is an affront to our values."

Broun, along with 31 other Members, requested the report in April 2009.
