Building infrastructure and encouraging growth

Arizona is one of the fastest growing states in the nation--and it is essential that we have the infrastructure to support that expansion. The United States Census estimates that Arizona's population has grown 26.7% since 2000. Cultivating a sound transportation system is not a luxury: it is a vital part of our continued economic development and essential to preserving the quality of life we all expect.

We should never be stuck behind the wheel in traffic instead of spending time with our friends and loved ones. It is our responsibility to build a sound infrastructure for our children and grandchildren, rather than leaving them a congested and inefficient system. Tackling our transportation problems now is not just for us -- it's for them.

The new light rail system in the Valley is an asset to our community. Its extension will help to promote sustainable economic growth and preserve our precious natural resources. However, it is important that the light rail is used as a complement to other transportation system developments, such as new and better roads, improved bus systems, and encouraging a shift in our commuting culture.

Arizona's transportation system connects citizens, communities, and businesses to enhance our quality of life. Improving our infrastructure is essential to building a stronger future for Arizona and I will fight to ensure that Arizona receives its rightful share of federal funding for transportation.
