Vermont agriculture products should cost less than products that have been transported great distances. We need not subsidize local products but we should not indirectly subsidize products that come from 5000 miles away. The total cost to the environment resulting from transport of agricultural products must somehow include some form of a distance based tariff. Such a tax should make it easier for local farmers and food processors to compete.
