Congressman Phil Hare (D-IL) today released the following statement in response to House Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Joe Barton (R-TX) apologizing to British Petroleum CEO Tony Hayward for a $20 billion escrow fund that has been set up to pay victims of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
"Congressman Barton's apology to BP is shocking but not surprising given the Republican Party's long and cozy relationship with Big Oil. Barton is part of a group whose solution to our energy challenges is "drill baby drill.' It's these same members who helped dismantle regulation of the oil industry to the point where some companies were writing their own safety rules. The families of the 11 men killed on the Deepwater Horizon rig and the residents of the Gulf Coast are the ones who deserve an apology. Mr. Barton's decision to apologize to the company that caused this hardship is nothing short of disgraceful."
