Congressman Phil Hare (D-IL) today released the following statement in response to the United Nations Security Council's adoption of new sanctions against Iran.
"Today the UN Security Council appropriately voted to hold Iran accountable for its destabilizing and provocative attempts to start a nuclear weapons program. The international community must live up to its responsibility and reign in a regime that supports terror and increasingly incites regional tensions. The Obama Administration should be applauded for its multilateral effort that gave us this opportunity to effectively challenge Iran's actions with the broadest possible international support.
"Iran poses a grave threat to Israel. Indeed, Israel constantly faces provocations that it must remain vigilant against. The interception by Israeli security forces of a flotilla trying to breach a blockade of Gaza is another reminder of this. I fully support Israel and her right to defend herself in this or any other situation. But this incident serves as a reminder that the current situation is untenable and leaves Israel less secure, and we must work towards creating the conditions necessary for a permanent two-state solution."
