Lance Says U.N. Sanctions on Iran are Simply not Tough Enough

Statement

Date: June 11, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

In a direct response to the United Nations Security Council vote imposing new sanctions on Iran for continuing to violate its obligations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty, Congressman Leonard Lance (NJ-07) issued the following statement:

"After months of negotiating, the U.N. Security Council finally imposed new sanctions on Iran. However, the U.N.-passed resolution was significantly diluted by the Russians and Chinese, including little to no means of enforcement.

"Quite simply, these actions are not nearly enough. Now more than ever it is critical that Congress move forward with its own set of tougher sanctions on Iran and encourage our allies to impose stricter measures as well.

"We can no longer allow the Obama Administration to hamstring this Congress and obstruct the passage of crippling sanctions. The time to act is now. Our nation and the world cannot afford to wait any longer."
