Issue Position

As your representative I will champion an amendment to our State Constitution that makes equality in education in North Carolina a constitutional right.

Quality education is critical to the future prosperity of our children. What this amendment will do is enable families, teachers, and students to have the legal backing to demand a quality education from our government. Currently, there is no remedy for the citizens of North Carolina to address failing schools, which is why it is so important that we amend our constitution to reflect our commitment to affordable, quality education. Education is too important to be neglected, which is why we need a State Representative who is serious about improving our schools, and putting Guilford families first.

Quality Education as a Constitutional Right champions five basic points:

1. High Quality Public education is a fundamental Civil and human right that should be protected by the State Constitution.

2. The foundation and core of a democracy is an informed and engaged populace, and that the development of an informed and engaged populace requires a high quality public education for every child

3. Achieving a high quality public education for all will require building popular support and coordinated action amongst a diverse alliance of students, parents, teachers, administrators, public officials, legal experts, community members and organizations.

4. People that have historically been are presently excluded from high quality educational opportunities, particularly people from poor communities, immigrant communities, and communities of color, must play a leading role in the vision, formulation, an actualization of the work toward ensuring high quality public education for all.

5. Education is too important a public function to be rub by corporate and private interest with any bottom line other than educational excellence for all students.
As our campaign begins its dialogue with the voters of North Carolina we welcome your input for the conversation to help define what "quality" in education means to you. From this dialogue we hope to create a vision that represents the views of students, parents, and educators that will help every child have the basic opportunities to succeed.
