U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) said that a cooperative agreement signed today clears the way for building a significant drinking water project for Surrey, N.D.

Dorgan presided at a signing ceremony this morning in Minot with officials from North Prairie Rural Water District and the St. Paul District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Dorgan, who chairs the subcommittee in the Senate that funds the Corps, secured $425,000 in federal funding for the 75 percent federal share of the project's funding.

The investment will construct much-needed upgrades in water booster stations and also construct a larger water main, improving water delivery to the community. The improvements will also play a key role in developing a future water project for Deering, N.D.

"As chairman of the Senate's energy and water appropriations panel, I've worked to prioritize projects like this in our state that are eligible for federal funding," Dorgan said. "This is a good investment in rural communities that will have safe, dependable sources of drinking water now and for future generations."
