Counting the Unemployed

Press Release

Date: June 4, 2010

On Friday, the U.S. Department of Labor released employment statistics for the month of May indicating that 431,000 jobs were created. Only 41,000 of the jobs, however, were in the private sector. The overall number was inflated by the 411,000 temporary workers hired by the U.S. Census Bureau. The figure marks the lowest number of jobs created by the private sector since January of this year, and a dramatic drop off of the overall jobs created in April which stood at 290,000. On the positive side, 29,000 jobs were added in the manufacturing sector bringing the total number of workers added to manufacturing payrolls to 126,000 in the first five months of 2010.

"I just hosted an Energy Expo that demonstrated with the right investments hundreds of thousands of jobs can be created in the private sector," said Congressman Tim Murphy. "The government should not be artificially inflating employment numbers by hiring temporary workers. It is not a solution to strengthen the economy. Through the use of clean coal technology, natural gas, nuclear, and energy efficient technology we can create long-term, high-paying jobs."
