Barrasso Requests Changes to Cobell Legislation

In a letter to the Chairmen and Ranking Members of the Senate Finance Committee and House Ways and Means Committee, U.S. Senator Barrasso (R-Wyo.) requested Congress make several changes to the Cobell legislation that is included in the tax extenders bill.

Senator Barrasso, Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, made the following statement about the letter:

"I recently asked Indian tribal leaders for their feedback about five important parts of the Cobell settlement. I specifically wanted to know their opinions about attorneys' fees, incentive awards, bank selection, the $2 billion land consolidation program and the pro rata formula used for allocating the $1.412 billion settlement fund. A wide range of leaders and individuals throughout Indian Country responded with thoughtful concerns and constructive advice. I appreciate their feedback and value their opinions.

"We have an opportunity now to fix some of the concerns in a way that will help individuals in Indian Country without destroying the agreement. I look forward to working with the Chairmen and Ranking Members to ensure that these issues are addressed before Congress approves the settlement."
