Office of State Employment Relations Announces State Government Offices Will Close for Statewide Furlough

Press Release

Date: May 24, 2010
Location: Madison, WI

The Wisconsin Office of State Employment Relations (OSER) today announced that several state offices will be closed Friday, May 28th as part of the state's government-wide furlough program. This will be the fourth of eight designated state-government-wide furlough days over the next two years.

As a result of the furlough, many state services will not be available. The public is urged to check ahead before traveling to any state-run office or service center. Closures include DMV service counters and phone centers, the Unemployment Insurance call center and the Department of Health Services' Vital Records office, among others. Some state-operated institutions and other services, such as emergency services, all State Parks and Trails and many online and automated services within agencies will remain available.

Governor Jim Doyle announced the furloughs in May as part of a budget fix for a $6.6 billion deficit that resulted from decreased revenue projections due to the national economic downturn. The state estimates that the furloughs along with other actions will save approximately $224 million over the course of the two-year budget biennium.
